Night Shift Security Checklist for Offices & Sites

For offices, factories & yards Approx. 7 min read

Night shifts are when sites are most vulnerable – fewer people around, tired guards and reduced supervision. Over the years, our supervisors have developed a simple checklist that keeps guards alert and reduces the chance of incidents.

1. Start of shift checks

  • Confirm guard reporting time and note it in the register.
  • Check uniform, ID card, torch, whistle and communication device.
  • Brief the guard on any special instructions for the night.

2. Perimeter and gate inspection

Before traffic reduces, do a slow walk around the boundary and main gate:

  • Look for broken fencing, open side gates or damaged locks.
  • Ensure security lights are working, especially dark corners.
  • Check that CCTV cameras covering the gate and entrance are on.

3. Logbook discipline

A neat logbook is one of the best tools for supervision. We insist that guards record:

  • Every visitor or vehicle entry after hours
  • Patrol timings and route (for large sites)
  • Any unusual observation – sound, light, forced entry marks

4. Patrolling pattern

Instead of sitting in one place, guards should move on a fixed but unpredictable pattern:

  • Patrol every 45–60 minutes for medium sites.
  • Use different routes – front, back, rooftop, parking etc.
  • Report completion of each round to the supervisor by call or message.

5. Handling visitors at night

Delivery staff, drivers or late-working employees must be handled carefully:

  • Record their details and purpose of visit.
  • Do not allow unknown persons to “wait inside” for long.
  • For offices, ask a responsible staff member to confirm entry if needed.

6. Emergency readiness

Every night the guard should know:

  • Where the fire extinguishers are and how to use them.
  • Whom to call in case of fire, accident or medical issue.
  • The location of main electrical panels and any diesel generator.

7. Supervisor surprise checks

Our supervisors conduct surprise visits at varying times. During the visit they:

  • Verify guard alertness and behaviour.
  • Review logbooks and camera footage quickly.
  • Share feedback with the client and, if required, recommend extra measures.
