In everyday conversation people often use “PSO” and “bodyguard” as the same term. In practice there are small differences in training, responsibility and how we deploy them.
Who is a PSO?
PSO stands for Personal Security Officer. PSOs are usually deployed for elected representatives, senior executives and high-risk individuals. They:
- Study the daily routine and route plans
- Coordinate with driver, escort vehicle and local police
- Stay close to the principal at all times during movement
- Watch the crowd for suspicious behaviour
Who is a bodyguard?
A bodyguard focuses more on physical protection – maintaining a protective circle around the client and acting as a visible deterrent. For many business owners or families, a trained bodyguard is sufficient for occasional travel or events.
Key differences in deployment
- Planning: PSOs spend more time on advance planning and coordination.
- Documentation: PSO deployments often include written movement plans and briefings.
- Team size: PSOs may work as part of a small team with additional guards or escorts.
Which one do you need?
If you face specific threats or handle sensitive responsibilities, a PSO-led team is usually recommended. If you simply want an extra layer of safety for travel, events or cash movement, a trained bodyguard or duo of guards may be adequate.
